What is an EV Charging Station?

It’s easy to find public charging stations while you’re out and about in Memphis, especially if you download an EV charging app on your smartphone. These apps are often created by EV charging networks to conveniently display where their stations are located. Most of these apps offer the ability to monitor your charging activity, see nearby stations on a map and even schedule charging sessions in advance.
You’ll have to pay to use most public charging stations, though there are some free ones. Once you swipe your card, you can simply connect your EV cable to begin charging your car.
Charging Options
It’s important to understand the three types of charging stations: Level 1, Level 2 and DC Fast Charging. Once you get a feel for how these options differ, you’ll be better prepared to upgrade to a new EV.
Level 1 chargers are simply common residential 120-volt AC outlets. As they produce a small amount of power compared to the other two options, these chargers are the slowest way to power up your EV. It can take up to 40-50 hours or more to charge an EV from zero to 80 percent with a Level 1 charger.*
Level 2 chargers are prevalent and popular, since they can charge an EV from zero to 80 percent in about four hours.* You’ll find Level 2 chargers at many public charging stations, and you can even have one installed in your garage by an experienced electrician. Plug-in hybrid models can also be charged at Level 2 chargers.
DC Fast Chargers are the most powerful of the three types. These are usually only found at public charging stations since they produce an immense amount of power. With the ability to charge an EV from zero to 80 percent within an hour, DC Fast Chargers are the best way to top off an EV battery quickly when you’re in a rush.*
